Wreck of the Delaware

Long, long ago a place called Whakatu that a woman called Huria Matenga lived in was making up a storm. Huria was looking out the window at the sea but in her sight she saw a boat in need of desperate help so she went to get her husband Hemi to have a look too. He thought they should rescue the sailors. They ran to get Hohepata, their friend to help. They ran down to the beach, jumped into the sea and swam out into the furious waves. Now Henry Squirrell was a very good swimmer so he swam to shore with a rope and tied one end to the boat and the other end to the rocks. But Henry got scraped by the rocks and everyone thought he was dead so a man threw a rope and tied it to Henry and held the other end with all his might. He put Henry on a bunk and left him there
As Huria reached the beach the sailors were still climbing across the rope. Huria could tell that the sailors would not make it at that rate. Huria plunged in to the sea once again. She grabbed the sailors one by one and rescued them. Then Huria swam again to get the captain. While they got warm and dried they saw Henry calling for help but the rope had snapped and the sea was fierce so he had to stay there. It was sad because Henry drowned with the boat. Now Huria and her companions are famous throughout New Zealand.
